Improve Confluence performance with Instance Optimizer

The performance of your Confluence instance can be affected by multiple factors, such as the number of users, groups and directories it holds, how much version history is stored for pages and attachments, or how many spaces are no longer in use.

Instance Optimizer for Confluence helps you identify and address such factors before they cause any performance degradation. From cleanup tools to recommended settings, we've put together the key things that will keep your Confluence fast and stable:

In Confluence Data Center, this app is bundled exclusively in Long Term Support (LTS) releases starting from Confluence 9.2.27 LTS and 10.2.20 LTS, and is not included in non-LTS releases.

For non-LTS versions, install it via the Portfolio Insights for Confluence Data Center app directly from the Atlassian Marketplace.

Configure Instance Optimizer for Confluence

To use and configure the app, you must be logged in as a user with the Confluence administrator global permission. Overview of global permissions in Confluence

After you install the app, you can open it from Confluence administration.

To open the app:

  1. In the upper-right corner of Confluence, select Confluence administration, and then select General configuration.

  2. In the sidebar, under Instance Optimizer, select Overview. A new page will open, displaying all available optimization options.

  1. Overview page: Your central hub for accessing all optimization features.

  2. User cleanup: Scan your instance for potentially inactive, duplicate, bot and never-used accounts, and for groups and directories with no members or no active members. Then deactivate, reactivate or delete users, delete groups and disable directories in bulk.

  3. Set retention rules: Automatically delete previous versions of pages and attached files. This reduces the version history data stored in your database and file system. Requires the Confluence System Administrator global permission.

  4. Identify unused spaces: Use analytics data to identify spaces that have not been viewed or updated recently. This helps you decide which spaces to clean up.

  5. Archive unused spaces: Archive old or unwanted spaces to exclude them from search. This helps improve search result relevance.
